Rapturous applause broke out at a meeting when plans to expand Stansted Airport flights were unanimously refused.

Members of Uttlesford Council's development control committee voted to refuse Stansted's bid to expand annual passenger numbers by ten million within eight years.

Planning officers recommended the scheme to expand the airport from its 25 million limit should be turned down, citing nine reasons for the refusal.

These included the impact it would have on noise, air quality, road and rail networks, water consumption and the quality of local life. It is expected BAA will launch an immediate appeal against the decision.
