A SCHOOLGIRL is among the victims of a crime spree in Tiptree.

The girl’s bike, worth £120, was stolen from inside the school gates at Baynards Primary School in Townsend Road.

It was one of five incidents in the village discovered yesterday.

Nerys Maidment, headteacher at Baynards, said: “It was outrageous coming into school in the morning to see they had taken a child’s bike. Who would do that?

“The girl even said why would they want a child’s bike?

“Thankfully we have them on CCTV.”

The thieves also stole an honesty box and eggs from a property in Grove Road and milk from the doorstep of a home in Green Lane.

A plastic plant was lifted up and a money box and alarm taken from a home in Maldon Road and wheel covers and another bicycle were taken from a property in Cedar Avenue.

Terry Slater, chairman of Tiptree Parish Council, added: “On their own they may seem like minor crimes but they are not minor to the individuals affected.

“I am very disappointed this has happened in our community.

“It may not mean a great deal to the people responsible but it means a lot to the victims.”

Insp Barry Atkinson said officers are taking these crimes seriously and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

He said: “We condemn this type of behaviour. It is an abuse of trust which took place within a rural local community.

“We want to reassure the public and make them aware this has happened so they protect and secure their property.

“This is a low crime area but we urge people to be mindful.”

Anyone with information can call Colchester police on 101.
