LONG-SERVING Stanway councillor Colin Sykes became Colchester’s 181st Mayor with a promise to further strengthen ties within the borough.

Mr Sykes, who has represented the Lib Dems for 19 of the last 25 years, donned the badges of office in Colchester’s Moot Hall at yesterday’s Mayor-Making ceremony.

He told the audience, which included 16 family members, local dignitaries and pupils from Stanway’s three state schools, his theme for the 12 months in office would be “Colchester......United”.

Joined by fellow Stanway councillor and Mayoress Laura Sykes, the retired former banker stressed while he was happy to support the town’s football club, his primary aim was to enhance the status of Colchester borough and Stanway in particular.
