A CAMPAIGN to save a rural bank branch has stepped up a gear.

Nationwide is set to close its Brightlingsea branch at the end of the July citing profitability, with staff being transferred to other offices.

The decision sparked outrage from local traders and residents, and a petition launched by the town council has already gathered more than 1,250 signatures.

Harwich and North Essex MP Bernard Jenkin has also backed the campaign by writing to Nationwide’s chief executive asking him to halt the plans.
