AN amateur photographer has reacted to a popular video which depicts Colchester as a run-down town.

Paul Ost, 55, watched the YouTube video, posted by Terry Earl, and decided to post his own on the sharing website, showing the town’s virtues.

Mr Earl’s video has attracted more than 11,000 views, while Mr Ost’s has about 150, but Mr Ost said people are more inclined to watch negative videos than positive ones.

“People probably want to watch things which are more negative, so it will be difficult to match the number of people who have watched that video,” said engineer Mr Ost, of Newcastle Avenue, in Colchester.

He added: “I thought it would be good for people to see this one because it shows what Colchester does have, rather than showing it in a really negative light.

“There are parts of the town which need fixed, but I think we have more good than bad and I think a lot of people will agree.”

Mr Ost’s video includes picturesque shots of Colchester High Street, the Dutch Quarter and Castle Park, while Mr Earl’s video showed a number of vacant shop fronts in the town centre and also criticised the £26million Firstsite art gallery as well as the new £2million bus station in Osborne Street.
