Breakthrough in Cassie's Law

A GRATEFUL mother has thanked the thousands of supporters who have helped to create Cassie’s Law.


Jackie McCord was determined no-one should die again due to a loophole in the law which allowed unfit drivers to get behind the wheel.

 

She acted after her daughter, Cassie, 16, was mown down and killed by a driver as she stood on the pavement in Head Street, Colchester.

Three days earlier the driver, Colin Horsfall, 87, of Rowhedge, had been advised by police not to drive again after failing an eyesight test.

Jackie McCord lobbied the Government for police to have extra powers to revoke a driver's licence where they considered them unfit to drive.

Now, road safety minister Stephen Hammond has said an application from the police will be fast-tracked by the DVLA - meaning a licence can be revoked in a matter of hours, not days.
