Councillors presenting to national conference

SENIOR councillors from Colchester are presenting to a national conference on Monday.

Council leader Anne Turrell and finance boss councillor Paul Smith are speaking at the District Councils’ Network assembly.

They will give a presentation on What are the Social Consequences for our Communities of Welfare Reform?

The event, at Local Government House in Smith Square, London, brings together representatives from councils across England with local government minister Brandon Lewis giving the keynote speech.

Why spend more money on travel meals etc when a conference call network could easly be set up and used for relatively no cost.a jolly with travel meals and expenses all on the tax payer is a perk of the job eh?

Colchester Council has an appalling track record in cutting back services to the elderly, disabled and poor. What useful advice could they give to other councils? Still, it is a nice taxpayer paid holiday for our elected dictatorship.

It's only a day trip to London, hardly a jolly. Councillors Turrell and Smith have a lot to answer for, but this ought to be too trivial for anyone to get excited about. Save your indignation, the pair of you, for something more important.

If our council bureaucrats want to publicise their useless ideas, let them do it in their own time and money.

Obviously as they've been invited to speak to a national conference someone thinks the council is getting it right. We shall see I guess.

Andy Hamilton and Wellnow are right.
The Gazette should have asked Ms
Turrell and Mr Smith the following :

1,How much will this
outing to London cost taxpayers?.
2.Is it necessary?.
3.Will you be travelling first class at
our expense?.
4.Will you be staying overnight at
our expense?.

People are losing their jobs;we are
taxed to the hilt and shops are closing all over town (Staples at Colne View
Retail Park is among the latest).
Yet the wasteful Colchester Borough
Council continues to squander
taxpayers' hard-earned money,as if it doesn't matter.

PS: Reginald47 (or may I call you
Cliff?): I noticed that you were posting on these pages - berating council
critic Andy Hamilton - in the early hours of Christmas Day.Didn't you have anything better to do at Christmas?.What a sad and unpleasant individual you are - and a hypocrite ,too - but what a perfect advertisement you are for your beloved council.

If you want to see Colchester Council's attitude to the public, read last weeks Essex County Standard front page. It was about the so called "bus station".
.
Three quarters of councillors ignored a personal request by ECN to comment. Those that did said they had heard no complaints! Clearly a huge democratic gulf yet I am forced by law to pay taxes to this incompetent body.
.
Established and well respected local institutions are being destroyed in cutbacks yet councillors want increased "allowances" and still pour our money into delusions such as the "cultural quarter".
.
Councils are here to benefit the people who pay them. So I ask again why should our money be wasted on ego trips for our bureaucrats.

We live in an age of technology undreamed of by those who set the system up.l wonder if they would have been as frightened to embrace it as we now seem to be.or is there another reason?
