Children's wicker fences still facing the chop despite delay

Paul Smith has spoken out against county council bosses' decision to rip out children's wicker fences Paul Smith has spoken out against county council bosses' decision to rip out children's wicker fences

HIGHWAYS bosses are still planning on ripping out a wicker fence built by school children to stop parents parking on grass verges.

The work, which was meant to be carried out on Tuesday, December 11, had been delayed and prompted hope that county hall was considering a u-turn.

But an Essex County Council spokesman confirmed the work, outside Friars Grove Primary School, in Upland Drive, is still due to go ahead despite it not being on the works programme for this week.

Essex County Council made the decision without consulting either the school or Growing In St John’s, an environmental group which helped children.

The work is to be carried out because it is “causing an obstruction to the highway”.

Nonsense. Please give us the name of the person responsible for this ridiculous decision.

Single yellow line so parking is allowed at certain times, passengers in the nearside of a car cannot get out because of the obstruction. Main reason is I suspect cars could be scratched by the wicker fence resulting in a claim against the council.

Now the town hall tyrants have got involved there is nothing anyone can do to stop the official vandalism.
.
After the fence is removed the petty officials will go back to putting their feet up whilst putting in exhorbitant expense claims. Let them have their petty triumph and anonymously plant up suitably tough shrubs such as holly.
.
Ideally a row of attractive variagated holly alternating with a hebe would brighten up this dull area. Just ensure you have spares to replace those destroyed by the intellectually challenged!
.
Just remember to do it anonymously and deny all knowledge of who is responsible. Guerilla gardening works as long as no councillors get involved!

County Hall Andy hope you are trying to make it sound like a CBC decision?

The fence is there to stop parents parking on the grass verge.

Put some bollards or rocks there and that will stop them. The fence gives a false sense of security for pedestrians.

Plum Crazy ! If highways don't replace it with something of their own then they need to be fired. There are some parents who don't give two hoots about pedestrians and the safety of kids. Outside the primary school where my youngest goes to I've seen cars parked so far across the pavement that pedestrians either have to walk across peoples gardens or out in the road. I've even seen cars with all 4 wheels off the road.

What a twisted article saying that ECC made the decision without consulting anyone....hang on, they don't have a duty to, they do have duty to remove obstructions from the highway. Why did CBC give the ok for this when they didn't have the authority to do so? This could all have been sorted if ECC had been contacted at the very start to agree what would have been appropriate. As it is, I think these wicker fences are a great idea. Howevever, if ECC won't play ball get a copy of their Verges policy and start placing white painted blocks along the edge.
