THE work of one of East Anglia’s best-known painters and printmakers can be seen in a pre-Christmas exhibition at the Haylett’s Gallery, in Maldon.
The High Street gallery will be showing linocuts, etchings and watercolours by Richard Bawden until December 22.
Black Notley-born Richard is the son of celebrated artist Edward Bawden and studied art at Chelsea St Martin’s College, before heading to London’s Royal College of Art.
He grew up as part of the Great Bardfield Artists group, alongside his father and others, including Michael Rothenstein and John Aldridge.
Over the years, his images have included book illustrations, murals for restaurants, etched glass, church windows and doors, a poster for London Transport, mosaics and wrought iron furniture.
Now based in Suffolk, Richard has had more than 60 solo exhibitions in Britain and overseas and his work can be found in the collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Tate Gallery, both in London, and in the Queen’s art collection at Windsor. He has also taught drawing and printmaking at London and provincial art schools.
An active member of the Royal Watercolour Society, he is an elected member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, and a former chairman of the Gainsborough House Print Workshop, in Sudbury, Suffolk, where he has mounted two major exhibitions.
This year, he won a prize at the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers’ spring exhibition.
Haylett’s Gallery is open between 10am and 5pm, Tuesdays to Saturdays. Admission is free.
