Residents were led to safety early today after a fire ripped through a stack of tyres.
The dazed residents, of Albert Street, Colchester, grabbed warm clothes and tried to wake neighbours as the heat intensified and smoke filled the air.
One woman's car went up in flames while windows cracked and guttering melted with the intensity of the heat.
Police are treating the fire as suspicious. Central Tyre was unavailable for comment.
