More than 200 motorists were caught flouting the law during a 20-hour crackdown in Colchester.
Road policing chiefs pledged to leave irresponsible motorists with nowhere to hide by surrounding the town in a "ring of steel," as officers from across Essex converged for the surprise operation.
Police bosses blame thoughtless and dangerous driving for a string of serious crashes that have seen Colchester branded an accident hotspot in official statistics.
