IF you fancy doing something different this summer, why not try graffiti?

The scourge of undergrounds, bridges and subways, the art form is now becoming increasingly popular with commercial artists selling their work for thousands of pounds.

Later this month there’s an opportunity for youngsters to give it a go and leading the Colchester workshop will be some of the best artists in the business, the Graffiti Kings.

Based in London, the group was set up by legendary graffiti artist Darren Cullen, and their work has appeared on such programmes as the X Factor and the Apprentice.

Working with professional artists from the group, the graffiti workshop takes place at the Quaker Meeting House, Church Street, Colchester, on August 25 from 10am to 4pm, priced £55, which includes materials.

The workshop is being organised by local photographer Sally Parkinson and as well as graffiti she has organised film and dance workshops at the Headgate Theatre in Colchester.

Film workshops run this week on Wednesday and Thursday, then again on August 9 and 10, and 17 and 18 between 10am and 4pm.

The cost for the two days is £70.

Dance workshops, also 10am to 4pm at the Headgate, have different themes. On August 11 it’s the Black Eyed Peas, August 16, Beyonce and August 22, Michael Jackson.

The cost is £25 for the day.

Sally says: “I wanted to create workshops that were different, and brand new. I want the children to be fully engaged with these workshops and have lots of fun.”
