TESCO has been told to start work on a mini-supermarket, which has stalled since permission was granted a year ago.

Colchester Council gave Tesco permission to build a 1,328sqm store in Butt Road, Colchester, despite campaigners’ concerns over a significant increase in traffic.

However, Tesco is slowing down its building programme, which has particularly affected stores like the one proposed in Butt Road.

Paul Smith, councillor responsible for business at Colchester Council, says Tesco should start building or give the up site.

He said: “It is disappointing when a site which has planning permission is not touched.

“It means the jobs are not being created and, of course, we are not benefiting from the business rates. If Tesco is not in a position to develop it it should offer the site to another supermarket.”

“I do understand Tesco’s financial position is under pressure, but they could generate some money by selling it to someone who would want to develop it.

“Sites like this are just like sites for homes – they shoot up in price once it has permission.”
