TRAVELLERS have pitched up on an Essex County Council car park.

About nine caravans and other vehicles drove onto the car park behind Essex House, The Crescent, Severalls Business Park, Colchester.

They arrived last night.

The car park has an automatic stop barrier, chains and padlocks.

It is not yet known if entry was forced or if the car park had been left open.

Police were called and arrived at about 11.20am to talk to the travellers, who arrived in vehicles with irish number plates.

Several other vans are also going on and off the site with occupants looking for work.

The travellers declined to comment when asked how long they plan to stay.

A traveller liaison officer from the council has also visited the car park, with spaces for about 100 cars.

The caravans are parked in the shade by bushes along both sides of the car park.

Employees from the council are being prevented from parking on the site while the travellers remain.

Essex Police is investigating.

I hope they get tickets and they are chased up until the bill is paid - This would happen to any other citizen

Well they would park there, after all it's OUR fault for not providing paved, swathes of land, with paid-for facilities for them to park on after THEY decide to just turn up uninvited.

Still, at least it gives them time to case the business park.

Time to turn French?

But you guys have to understand that the travellers are an "ethnic minority" and as such can do what they like. Lock up your sheds!

We'll they would do that wouldn't they! Parking on private land for free and then expecting tax paying people to foot the bill for the mess that is left. Authorities would 'come down' on me if I did something unlawful so why should we **** foot around with those not willing to tow the line?
No point giving them a bill for the clear up as it wouldn't get paid.

They should be escorted to Holyhead and placed on a ferry back to Ireland and passports placed on the banned list far much cheaper than this chase them from site to site and not paying for the damage caused.

If they can afford the ferry crossing from Ireland and the petrol to get here surely they can pay for parking on the car park, normal charges are about £20 for 24hrs aren't they!!!! and then they can S*D off back again.

it's a staff car park not a public one so no fees to pay.
