COLCHESTER Rugby Club powered to their third straight win in National League division three following an 18-17 success against East Grinstead.

The dramatic triumph at Mill Road came hot on the heels of narrow victories against Bracknell and Westcliff.

And after losing their first three games of the season, it means they have now won four of their last five.

With the floodlights on early due to the damp, gloomy conditions, Anthony O’Riordan’s side nosed in front thanks to a drop goal from David Higgins.

However, a try and conversion at the other end gave Grinstead a 7-3 lead.

Another try and conversion from the visitors then extended their lead to 14-3.

Colchester showed their resilience after the break, though, and a try from captain Liam Pickett, coupled with a successful conversion, pulled the score back to 14-10.

A penalty from Higgins reduced the deficit to a single point and then a try from Jaid Wiltshire put resurgent Colchester 18-14 ahead.

O’Riordan’s men are away to Westcombe Park next Saturday.
