PAUL McDermott shot the day's lowest gross with his 76 to win division one of the Playgolf Colchester Monthly Medal.

McDermott (ten) carded 12 pars and birdied the par-five second, to card a score of nett 66.

The excellent course conditions and fast greens saw a sharp mid-iron or short game rewarded with scoring opportunities.

However, bad shots or course management are punished by some extremely difficult, low percentage shots.

Jonathan Tait (ten) topped a three-way countback tie with ten pars.

His three over gross back nine put Mick Seaman (9) into third place and Stephen Jonson (9) out of the podium positions.

In-form Ivan Southernwood (16) won division two on countback from Sam Durrant (16), after both players carded nett 74.

Southernwood carded highlights of four pars with Durrant carding five pars, losing out after a disastrous 17th hole.

Matthew Clark (15) too third place, also on countback pushing Alan Smith (14) out to fourth place after both carded nett 75.

Ken Todd (19) won in division three with a level-par nett 70.

Scott Clark (22) was second on countback from third-placed Alan Pearman (27), after both carded nett 71.

Greg King ticked off a golfing achievement with his first-ever hole in one coming on the 125-yard, par three 16th hole.

King followed vice-captain Stephen Peeling, who also managed the same feat on the same hole, two weeks earlier.

Playgolf Seniors entertained Five Lakes in a home friendly match, using the Hambro Formula.

Playgolf ran out winners of the first leg by 14 holes.

Geoff Backhouse showed some class to record the lowest gross of the day.

He won the Playgolf Senior Millennium Cup with 80 strokes (nett 68) finishing ahead of vice-captain Stephen Peeling (16) on countback.

Jeff Coles (16) was third with nett 71 while Geoff Backhouse and Derek Manister recorded birdies on par threes to win a sleeve of balls each.
