Benjamin Sesko now feels in the “perfect” place having recovered from the shin injury which brought his first season with Manchester United to a premature end and disrupted his summer.
A long-standing target of the Old Trafford outfit, the 23-year-old moved to the north west last August from RB Leipzig in a 76.5million euros deal (£66.3m) with 8.5m euros (£7.4m) in potential add-ons.
Sesko scored 12 times across a promising first campaign with the Red Devils, including during May’s 3-2 victory against Liverpool in which he came off having exacerbated a shin injury that saw him miss this summer’s friendlies.
The striker was able to come off the bench in the first three Premier League games of the season and scored when starting Thursday’s Champions League 4-0 victory against Sabah.
“It was basically just to make sure that it doesn’t get worse because this was kind of a problem,” Sesko said of the management of the shin issue which prevented him playing for 16 weeks.
“We just need a little bit longer, longer than usual, because if you start too early, it might appear again. And I think waiting a little bit longer was a great decision, and now it’s healed, so it’s perfect.
“I got a kick last season, but it was also a little bit of an overload from myself. So basically, that was it.”
Sesko believes he has struck the right balance between muscle and movement on his return to fitness, with the Slovenia international also feeling happier after a year in Manchester.
“Now for me it’s like I’m really enjoying it. I’m really happy here. I love life here. I have team-mates that are perfect. I can’t really complain about anything.”
Sesko is loving life at United, who not only held an interest during his time with RB Leipzig and sister club RB Salzburg but prior to that as 16-year-old playing for Domzale in his homeland.
“It was just basically the moment that we decided because I think it was important,” Sesko said of his decision-making process.
“It would be a little bit too huge of a step for me to jump from, let’s say, Austria or Slovenia directly to Manchester United, so I just needed those steps to get better and better, and I’m finally here.”
