Pronouns: to most people irrelevant and something they rarely must consider or even think about. Unfortunately, this is not the case for everyone.

As unrelatable as it may seem to some cis people, identifying as the gender you were assigned at birth is well and truly a blessing. Although it may seem like nothing, displaying your pronouns on any social media is the easiest way to be an LGBTQ+ ally. If it is only trans or non-binary people displaying their pronouns on social media, it is easy for them to stand out and feel isolated or even feel like an easy target. The more cis gendered people who do this, the more normalised it will become and the more trans and non-binary people will feel comfortable doing so. Therefore, removing the power from the people who don’t choose to respect other people's right to identify as who they truly are.

This feature is so important and should really be added to every social media site. Even if pronouns are something you’ve never had to consider and aren't that bothered about, for the sake of the people around you, it's so important. You never know who is struggling with gender identity. It could be your friend, your cousin or even one of your siblings. Therefore, it’s so prevalent in today's society and even more important that we educate ourselves.

After speaking to Sam (name changed to protect identity) they explained “The use of the new pronouns feature on Instagram is something that I think, not only brings awareness to people but really helps people like me feel more comfortable in our own skin.” They continued “Throughout this year more of my friends and people I know have used this feature and it's really just become a normal thing now, making it less easy for people to misgendender me. I just feel far more accepted and far more myself!”

No matter what your pronouns are, by sharing them on social media, you are subconsciously supporting a wider community and with the touch of just a few bottoms, making the internet and world a more inclusive and safer place, so why wouldn’t you?
