Witham Town manager Danny Greaves admitted his side’s 10-2 thrashing at the hands of promotion-chasing East Thurrock United was ‘shocking and embarrassing’.
Town were steamrollered by their Essex rivals at the Spicer McColl Stadium, Spa Road and boss Greaves admitted one of the main reasons for his side’s heavy defeat was their inability to defend set pieces, particularly early on.
Greaves said: “East Thurrock are the best team in the league.
“No-one expects or wants to be beaten 10-2 but it was an off day for us.
“We have had a culture at this club where we have had difficulty defending set plays.
“When you are five goals behind after just over 20 minutes and four of the goals have been conceded from set plays, you know you have a problem.
“The result is shocking and embarrassing but we have to remember that it is only three points.
“One of the problems that we have had this season is that we’re a very young side in terms of age and in terms of experience at this level and it’s a steep learning curve for them.”
