Danny Greaves enjoyed the perfect start to life as WITHAM TOWN’S new manager with victory over Northwood.

Darran Hawes' 11th minute free-kick proved enough to give Town their first win in division one north since September 6 and halt a run of ten league games without a victory.

Goalkeeper Rhys Madden saved a penalty from Sean Sonner with 12 minutes to go to ensure Town secured a much-needed three points at the Spicer McColl Stadium, Spa Road.

Chairman Tony Last was delighted to see Greaves get his reign as Town manager off to a winning start.

He said: “I’m pleased for Danny and I’m pleased for the players.

“Darran scored a good goal and it was a good all-round performance.

“It was a scrappy game but we played well and the win has lifted everyone around the club.

“Danny’s appointment is a good thing for the club and I hope that we can now build on this result and go on a winning run.”

Witham handed debuts to former Gloucester City midfielder Bradley Stopher and centre-back Nick Stockley, formerly of Tiptree United.

Both were impressive and helped fend off a strong finish from the visitors to clinch a long-awaited victory for Town.

Northwood announced after the game that they had parted company with their manager Colin Payne and coach Fred Cummings.
