BRAINTREE Town’s Will Davies has joined National League premier division side York City for an undisclosed sum.

It is a swift promotion for the 24-year-old striker, who only moved from Southern League Leiston in the summer and will now turn full-time.

It could, however, be short-lived, as the former Football League club dropped into the relegation zone after a defeat on Saturday.

Davies’s form has been inconsistent this season but at his best he has proved a handful for defences, notably in the two recent big wins over Havant (4-0) and St Albans (4-1), where he was a constant threat and scored in both games.

Davies told the York City website: “I’m buzzing to be here and I can’t wait to get going.

“I spoke to the gaffer earlier on this week and he knows I want to push on, so it was a no brainer about coming to York.

“I’m really looking forward to going full-time and pushing on, hopefully I can take my form from the start of the season straight into this.”

He made his debut on Saturday, coming off the bench at half-time, but could not prevent a 3-1 defeat to Hartlepool.

He is not the only ex-Braintree player in the York squad. Alex Woodyard, who played a major part in Iron’s run to the National League play-offs in 2016, joined in the summer from AFC Wimbledon.

Braintree bowed out of he FA Trophy at the second-round stage after losing 3-0 at National League North Gloucester City.

After a goal-less first half, Joe Parker gave Gloucester the lead before further goals from on-loan Birmingham City striker Ben Beresford and Brandon Smalley sealed the hosts' win.

Braintree boss Angelo Harrop said: "It was disappointing afternoon for us and our fans, who have travelled.

"I thought Gloucester did really well and there are no excuses, it was one game too far for us."

Braintree will be looking to get back to winning ways when they travel to play Dartford tomorrow night in National League South, kick-off 7.45pm.
