COLCHESTER United travel to play neighbours AFC Sudbury in a mouth-watering FA Cup clash, on Friday night.

Here's ten things you might not know about the Pitching In Isthmian League division north side from Suffolk.

1 The full name of AFC Sudbury is “Amalgamated Football Club Sudbury”.

The initials AFC in the name of a club usually refer to Association Football Club.

2 AFC Sudbury were formed in 1999 by the amalgamation of the former Sudbury Town and Sudbury Wanderers Clubs.

Town were by far the older of the two, formed in 1885, while Sudbury Wanderers were formed in 1958.

3 AFC Sudbury play in an upgraded stadium with modern facilities at the site of Sudbury Wanderers ground in the Ballingdon-cum-Brundon area of Sudbury.

Sudbury Town’s ground at The Priory was sold for development.

4 The U's game at AFC Sudbury is practically an Essex derby! AFC Sudbury play in a part of Sudbury which is on the southern side of the River Stour – an area which, until 1888, was in Essex. A Local Government Act transferred this area (Ballingdon-cum-Brundon) so it became within the boundary of the historic borough of Sudbury, taking it from Essex into Suffolk.

5 AFC Sudbury’s game against Colchester is only the second time in their history that they have reached the FA Cup first round.

The last time was in the 2000-2001 season when they lost 6-1 at Darlington, who at the time were a Football League club.

Gazette:

6 The Suds' leading all-time scorer is Gary Bennett, who played for Colchester United some 30 years ago.

Bennett, a member of the U's double-winning squad under Roy McDonough in the 1991-92 season, played 253 games and scored 172 goals during his two spells with the Suds.

7 AFC Sudbury play on an all-weather artificial pitch.

8 Angelo Harrop, the joint manager of AFC Sudbury, was a youngster at Colchester United from under-eight to under-19 level without making a first-team appearance.

He is the son of former U's youth-team boss, Geoff Harrop - credited for first spotting U's icon Lomana Tresor Lua Lua - and previously had spells in charge of the likes of Stanway Rovers and Brightlingsea Regent.

9 The Suds are the lowest-ranked side through to this year's FA Cup first round.

10 AFC Sudbury's first-ever game was against Colchester United in the Harwich Charity Cup Centenary Shield semi-final in July, 1999.

The U's ran out 4-2 winners after extra-time, in front of a crowd of nearly 400 spectators.
