He might only be 19 but Colchester United ’s latest new signing Jackson Ramm has already had an eventful career.

The attacking right-back, who has just penned a one-year deal with the U’s after impressing on trial in pre-season, has worn the colours of arguably Europe’s biggest club and represented his country, in the space of the last few years.

But after a somewhat nomadic existence in footballing terms, Ramm is now looking to lay down some roots and find some stability in his career.

And the talented teenager sees the U’s as the perfect club at which to do so.

Ramm said: “I see this as an excellent chance for me to do well.

“I’d been training with Colchester for three or four weeks and it’s nice to sign a contract.

“I want to play in as many games as possible this year.

“I know that I’ll be playing in the under-21 league and I can’t wait to get going.

“But I want to do well enough in games and in training to be in and around the first team set-up.”

Ramm was at Norwich City as a youngster, representing them at under-11 to under-14 level.

But the Dereham youngster was released by the Carrow Road club in 2006 and joined Cambridge United, where his performances really caught the eye.

Ramm spent several weeks on trial at Manchester United in 2008 and represented them in the Nike Premier Cup.

But when a permanent move to Old Trafford failed to materialise, Blackburn Rovers snapped up the then 15-year-old defender in January, 2009.

Rovers boss Sam Allardyce rated Ramm so highly that they paid Cambridge a fee for his services.

Ramm was a regular in the reserves during his time at Ewood Park and last year played for England under-18s, in their 3-0 win over Poland.

But following his release from Rovers he was left without a club, prompting Colchester boss John Ward to snap him up after a successful trial.

“I’ve had some highs and some lows,” said Ramm.

“I’ve trained and been involved with some really big clubs.

“I was thrilled when Blackburn said that they would offer me a contract and bit their hand off when they asked me to sign.

“I had a good year and a half at a Premier League club and training with their players every day helped me to grow up as a player.

“I try to work hard and better myself every single day and I try to aim high.

“Colchester is a great club and I’m really excited to get an opportunity with them.”
