Anthony Wordsworth was a proud man after leading Colchester United out for the first time.
The midfielder was handed the captain’s armband for their game at Walsall on Tuesday night.
Wordsworth has previously skippered the U’s at youth-team level, having progressed through their junior ranks.
But although he has captained them at senior level in matches before, it was the first time he had started as skipper.
Wordsworth, 23, was handed the responsibility after club captain Kem Izzet withdrew from the U’s squad on the morning of the game due to illness.
And with experienced professionals Matt Heath and Karl Duguid on the substitutes bench, Wordsworth was given the armband.
U’s boss John Ward said: “I knew once Kemi missed out and with Heath and Duguid on the bench that Woody would be the one to lead us out.
“He’s a local boy and he’s been brought up at this football club.
“He’s an extremely proud young man and he deserves it.
“He’s very disappointed too though, because you want to remember your first time as a captain as a winning one.”
