But the fact that Kem Izzet has achieved the impressive milestone for Colchester United also says much not only his durability and professionalism but also his determination to succeed.

Much has changed at the U’s since the midfielder pulled on the white and blue stripes for the first time after coming on as a substitute for Joe Keith in a game at Layer Road against Luton Town, nearly 11 years ago.

And Izzet himself has evolved, into a player who has been not far short of indispensible for a succession of different Colchester managers over the years.

His tenacious, industrious style has been a key component of numerous different U’s teams, including Phil Parkinson’s promotion-winning side.

Izzet played 41 times in Colchester’s historic 2005-06 season and was also a regular during their two years in the Championship.

It is a sign of his longevity that at the age of 31, he is still not only a key member of the current U’s squad but is club captain and an individual who is highly respected by team-mates and coaching staff alike.

Indeed, it would be a big surprise if Izzet was not offered a fresh deal to stay with the U’s when his current deal expires, at the end of the season.

Yet despite his popularity at Colchester, it’s probably fair to say that Izzet has not always been a fans’ favourite.

Perhaps that is mainly down to his playing style, with much of his industry and endeavour often bearing fruit off the ball and therefore frequently going unnoticed.

But while other players may have captured the limelight over the years with their goals or their flair, it is Izzet’s hard work and endeavour that has often paved the way for their success.

Having now racked up his 400th league appearance, Izzet can now look forward to a testimonial game at the end of the season.

Like the congratulatory hug he received from his manager John Ward after being substituted in his landmark game against Preston, it is one that is richly deserved.
