Colchester United claimed a point at Tranmere Rovers this afternoon, after playing out their first goal-less draw in nearly ten months.

Tranmere had the better of the first half, without really forcing Colchester keeper Ben Williams into a meaningful save.

Adam McGurk curled a shot just wide and then hit an effort straight at Williams before Rovers defender Ash Taylor somehow headed over from close range when it was easier to score, just before the half hour.

Rovers skipper John Welsh volleyed over before the U’s enjoyed a better spell in the minutes leading up to half-time, with Ashley Vincent blasting over just before the break.

The game continued in similar fashion in the second half, with chances few and far between.

However, U’s right-back Brian Wilson should have at least hit the target when he fired wide at the post, following Anthony Wordsworth’s cross-cum-shot.

Rovers keeper Owain Fon Williams denied Michail Antonio with ten minutes to go and defender David Buchanan hacked Magnus Okuonghae’s effort from the resultant corner off the line.

But Williams made a fine diving save to deny McGurk seconds later and then denied the Rovers midfielder again seconds later, from close range.

Williams made another fine save in the final minutes to deny Robinson’s fierce drive but despite being under pressure late on, Colchester held out for a point.
