Colchester United are hoping that Tom Bender will be released from hospital soon, following his serious head injury playing for Accrington Stanley last night.
Bender, 18, was taken to Blackburn Hospital for scans, after suffering serious concussion following an accidental collision during Stanley's Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie with Tranmere Rovers.
The game was abandoned after 39 minutes, after Bender had needed nearly half an hour of treatment on the pitch following his injury.
Bender will be assessed by doctors again and the U's have been in constant contract with Accrington Stanley, following the sickening injury.
U's boss John Ward said: “We’re just waiting on advice on what happens with Tom now.
“Once they have assessed him, his father is hopeful that he will be released from hospital soon.
“If he needs to come home his father is with him and we’ve told him to let us know if he needs anything at all."
Initial reports circulating nationally he suffered a serious spinal injury thankfully proved false.
