Aidy Boothroyd will not make any rash decisions in the transfer window.

But the Colchester United manager has hinted that a new central midfielder could be on the cards.

The month-long transfer window opened today for clubs to buy and sell players.

The U’s boss would ideally like his squad to have more depth.

However, he also indicated that he is happy with his current crop of players.

Boothroyd said: “I’m very careful not to disrupt what is a very good team at the moment.

“We do need depth and do need to bring in a couple for definite – but they need to be of the right calibre.

“At centre-back we’re in good shape and at left-back we have Marc (Tierney) and Matt Lockwood is still with us.

“At right-back we have John White and Phil Ifil, so we are OK there.

“In central midfield, we only really have three players.

“I know Anthony (Wordsworth) can play there, so that may be something we will look at.

“On the wide, Kevin (Lisbie) has gone back to Ipswich, we have Ashley Vincent coming back and that will be like a new signing when he comes back and Phil Ifil has done well there.

“We may need to do something there.

“Left side we are OK and up front we are OK and in goal we are alright, so possibly we are looking at something in the midfield area.”

Boothroyd admitted that some players could leave the U’s this month.

“I hope there are also some calls for some of our players, as there are some that need to move on,” he said.

“Jamie Guy, Matt Lockwood and Alan Maybury have not had the opportunities and professional footballers want to play football.

“David Perkins is still on the transfer list and he made it very clear a few days before I arrived that he wanted to get closer to the north west and then told me he wanted to go to Southend, which is an interesting one.

“They need to play football and I totally respect that.

“I’ll be very fair because I don’t see the point in keeping people who don’t want to be here.

“We are in a good position and want to push on, but you can’t do that when you are carrying dead wood.”
