Roy Keane hailed the character of his Ipswich Town side after their against-the-odds victory at Cardiff.

The struggling Blues turned round a half-time deficit to win yesterday’s Championship match 2-1, thanks to goals from Jon Walters and Jon Stead.

Afterwards Keane said: “With the chances we had we just about deserved it.

“We conceded a disappointing goal.

“Peter Whittingham scored a goal we all know he’s capable of and after that it was going to be a test of our character.

“Over the last few months, though, the players have shown that side to them but we haven’t been able to put the ball in the back of the net.

“This time we managed that in the second half and the character was there for everyone to see.

“If I thought my players weren’t up for the fight I’d be losing sleep.

“But I work with them every day and I know what they’re about.

“The last few weeks have been difficult and people have been quick to criticise, but the players have stuck together and that's impressed me.”

Town suffered a blow midway through the first half when goalkeeper Richard Wright suffered a knee injury and had to be replaced by Arran Lee-Barrett.

“We’ll know more in the next 24 to 48 hours,” said the Town boss.

“It’s obviously a concern for us. That’s two keepers we’ve lost in the last few days (loanee Asmir Begovic was recalled by Portsmouth).

“I’m not 100 per cent sure of the rules about bringing a new one in, but I’ll hold back for a few days and wait and see how Wrighty is.”

Meanwhile, Town have been drawn away to Championship rivals Blackpool in the third round of the FA Cup.

The match is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 2 and Keane said: “You always hope for a home draw but it's not to be.

“Blackpool are having a great season and we'll look forward to it.”
