New signing Josh Payne is on standby to make his Colchester United debut tomorrow.

The energetic West Ham United midfielder (pictured) has became the fifth loanee in the U’s ranks, after joining them on a month’s loan.

And the 18-year-old is waiting in the wings to replace Kem Izzet against Walsall.

Izzet is struggling to shake off a virus and Payne could be in line for a quick debut for Aidy Boothroyd’s side.

The teenager said he is looking forward to making an impact with the U’s.

Payne said: “I didn’t have any qualms about coming here because it’s a good opportunity.

“I want to work hard here and see what happens.

“I’ve heard good things about Colchester – they try and play football and hopefully they’ll be a good team to come and play for.

“I was with Ashley Vincent at Cheltenham but I don’t know a lot of the players. I’m always happy meeting new people to work with and they seem like a decent bunch.”
