Colchester United chief executive Steve Bradshaw has warned there is no ‘bottomless pit’ of transfer funds at the U’s.

But the club have vowed to fully back manager Paul Lambert in his efforts to revitalise his squad.

Bradshaw expects Colchester to make several new signings upon the the transfer window reopening.

Lambert has targeted a number of players he wants to bring to the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

And that will not necessarily mean that any of the club’s current players have to leave, according to Bradshaw.

He told the Gazette: “I expect it to be a busy summer.

“Clearly, there isn’t a bottomless pit of money. But at the same time, if we want to compete, we have to give the manager the resources to do so.

“I would be very surprised if we don’t bring four or five new players in.

“It’s no secret that we have not scored enough goals this year.

“We will be looking at attacking options.

“Paul wants the spine of the team to be as strong as it can be and that’s what we’ll try and do.

“We’re talking about additions to the squad – we’re not talking about a wholesale sale.

“We want to strengthen what we have already got, because we’ll need a relatively big squad if we are going to do what we want to do.”
