THE full-time whistle sounded and my first round of fixtures playing for Chelsea’s amputee team has just ended with a strong 3-1 win against Arsenal.

For me, it was a quick cool down and change and straight to the car to tune into BBC Essex’s fantastic commentary of the U’s game.

With how results have gone lately, I must admit I did think that was the only time that 'fantastic' word would feature in this week's column.

But much to my amazement, the word perhaps doesn't do justice to the game that unfolded before my ears.

What transpired was the football equivalent of Jekyll and Hyde; how can we go from being so poor to so good?

Gazette:

No fan, no matter how positive, would have expected the result and performance that was witnessed.

I sat and watched the whole game back this morning, just to be sure my senses had not betrayed me in what I had heard.

We looked like a team playing with confidence, one that to the outside observer would have been placed much higher than our league position at 3pm on Saturday showed.

The team attacked and pressed in numbers, scoring goals that were of the highest quality - all three will be in contention for goal of the season come May – and the defending was committed when needed.

All in all, it was a display of football that has been missing for a very long time.

Whatever the pre-match meal and set up that was put in place must be the one that stays.

Gazette:

The players sure looked like they had had their fill of Weetabix for breakfast with how they played. Just fantastic.

With all the noise in recent weeks about how poor we have been and questions asked about how much pressure there is from the top on team and style selection, it was great to go and show that it is not all doom and gloom on our return to playing at home.

While one win with a strong showing does not automatically make everything right and eradicate all the problems, it is a step in the right direction and does indeed prove we have a team that can produce a level of football that is much better than what we have witnessed so far.

The key now is to move forward and take all this into future games; the squad as one should see this as a step forward and build upon the feel good factor in the coming weeks.

One top outing does not make for instant turnaround, but it can be the foundation that it is constructed on.

Gazette:

Rome was not built in a day as they say, but we have proved we can do it - now the trick is to be consistent and do it regularly against all teams both home and away.

Our position in the table is still not looking anywhere near what we would want it to be, but anything is an improvement on bottom of the Football League for sure.

We have taken that small jump up; now it is time to make it into a leap. Up the U’s.
