IT is not quite done and dusted.

But Colchester United are tantalisingly close to securing their League Two status for another season.

And given the trails and tribulations of the current campaign, that is nothing to be sniffed at.

Four wins out of six have left Colchester 11 points above the drop zone, with six games remaining.

Having been teetering two points above the bottom two only a few weeks ago, the U's have now dragged themselves in a position where they now are on the verge of securing their EFL status, once again.

Wayne Brown, alongside his assistants Joe Dunne and Dave Huzzey, deserves credit for making Colchester a competitive side in every game.

And on the evidence of their comeback win at Harrogate Town, they are now a side capable of overcoming adversity in matches in order to get the result they want.

Gazette:

In truth, the U's looked pretty shell shocked in the opening 20 minutes of their game at the EnviroVent Stadium.

It brought back bad memories of last season, where Harrogate started like a house on fire against a Colchester side managed by Brown.

On that occasion, the hosts went on to claim a convincing win but there was no such repeat, this time around.

As they have shown over recent weeks, the Colchester of the present day are made of stronger stuff.

That they showed the mental strength to overcome the setback of conceding such an early goal says much about where the U's are as a team, right now.

Indeed, they are learning to deal with any disappointments that come their way.

Gazette:

Despite being unable to secure an equaliser, they stayed in their games against promotion-chasing sides Forest Green Rovers and Bristol Rovers.

And the outcome of their last two matches has been even better, with goals earning them a one-goal margin victory - and six precious points.

Goals look more likely than they did earlier in the season, with Noah Chilvers' excellent form playing a part in that.

The U's academy graduate has been pivotal in his side's revival under Brown and epitomises their energy and commitment, over recent games.

And at the other end, Colchester have looked much more solid defensively.

Gazette:

Luke Chambers is arguably enjoying his best spell in a U's shirt, Shamal George has made some key saves and Cole Skuse has been his usual consistent but effective self, protecting the back four.

It all bodes well for the remainder of the season - and the possibility of Brown and his team being given the job on a permanent basis.

That will probably be something for another day, perhaps one not too far around the corner, along with a full and frank analysis of just why the club have found themselves battling for their Football League place for a second successive season.

Until then, Colchester edge ever closer to safety and securing their League Two status.
