FINALLY after what seemed like forever on the road with the last two matches being away in pretty much the same part of the world, it was nice to have a Colchester United home game to look forward to.

Well, that was until Friday afternoon when out of the blue the game was off due to everyone’s favourite reason - Covid.

So suddenly, it was a spare Saturday and with it being an international break not much of a football fix to be had.

That's unless you count Soccer Aid, which in my option is very hard pressed to be counted as any form of the game we all know and love.

Then again, maybe it is just me showing my age and lack of celebrity knowledge.

But back to things Col U and although there was no action on the pitch, this past week has seen the transfer window close.

If I were to rate it so far I’d give the club a B-, mainly due to the fact that while the players we have brought in have strengthened the squad and we have managed to get a few off the wage bill, and actually get some income from the sale of Poku, we still failed to sign a striker that the past few games have shown we need.

While all is not lost and we can still sign players who are free agents and from non-league clubs, it would have been nice to have it all done and dusted by now.

That said, there was recently a teaser put out by the club on one of their social media channels about Trailist B, a certain Richard Kone; either someone was on a wind-up or else there is still movement on that front.

The Athletic Newham striker, who spent time on trial with the U's this summer, is a signing that would please the fans no end.

He's also he is a player that has shown fits with the system and can find the back of the net, so fingers crossed we see him put pen to paper very soon.

Another positive with the game being postponed on Saturday was the extra time for our current crop of injured players to return to the fold.

It is typical that we get ourselves a defensive system that works with three at the back with wing-backs pushing forward only to have injures to Ryan Clampin and Tom Eastman throw a spanner in the works.

Although injuries to key players is never a good thing, for it to happen this early in the season was a blow and once again proved with Tom that you don’t know what you have until it's gone.

He is a mainstay of our team, going about his business in a quiet, professional manner that you do not really appreciate until it is missing.

So with the enforced break, hopefully this will aid us ready for the long haul trip up to Barrow that the hardy U’s fans – myself included – will be undertaking on Friday.

We'll be hoping that we can extend our unbeaten away run and make the trip worthwhile with three more points on the board.

Until next time, up the U’s.
