A COUNCILLOR has called for Colchester Castle to be lit up in red and white to show support for the Three Lions in the final of Euro 2020.

Adam Fox, leader of Colchester Labour, has asked Colchester Council to light up the historic Norman keep to show support for Gareth Southgate's Three Lions.

The team play Italy on Sunday in the final of Euro 2020 - the men's team's first major international competition final since 1966.

Mr Fox wants to see the castle lit up in red and white, the colours of the St George flag, over the weekend to mark the occasion.

He said: "Great to see the Flag of St George flying from Colchester Town Hall.

"I’m calling on @yourcolchester  to light up Colchester Castle in White and Red over the weekend to show our support for the @England team."

England's win over Denmark on Wednesday night sparked huge scenes of celebration in Colchester, with crowds spilling out into Head Street.

A Colchester Council spokesperson said: “Reaching the final is a fantastic and long-overdue achievement by the England team.

“The Flag of St. George is already flying from the Town Hall and the Castle and we are looking at the possibility of cheering the team on – and hopefully celebrating an emphatic England win on Sunday – by lighting up the Castle this weekend too.”
