FOOTBALL fans are being urged to follow coronavirus guidance ahead of England’s next Euro 2020 match against Scotland on Friday.

Across Essex, England supporters celebrated their team getting off to a winning start against Croatia last weekend.

However, win or lose, fans are being reminded by Essex County Council’s director of public health to continue following Covid-19 guidance, whether in a pub or at home with family or friends.

John Spence, cabinet member for health, said: “It’s great that football fans can watch the game they love with friends and family.

"All we’re asking is that people stick to the rules for their own and others’ protection, particularly as the Delta variant is spreading so quickly and easily.

"I would ask everyone in Essex watching the game this weekend not to let their guard down. The next four weeks are crucial, so remember hands, face, space and please get the vaccine when it’s offered to you.”

Dr Mike Gogarty, Essex County Council’s director of public health, said: “It might be tempting to dismiss Covid-19 guidance, particularly if you’re spending time relaxing with friends and family while watching the game.

“However, if you are planning on watching the football this weekend, please do so safely so we that can Keep Covid in Check. To use a football analogy, we are in extra time with a one-goal lead, and it is crucial that everyone takes responsibility for their actions to make sure we win the game.”

Earlier this week, the Prime Minister announced there would be up to a four-week delay to Step Four of the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown, which is now planned for July 19.

Step Four will see all legal limits on social contact removed.
