Colchester United started 2008 in fine style with a splendid 2-1 triumph at Charlton Athletic.
Kevin Lisbie scored twice against his former club at the Valley.
And although substitute Luke Varney pulled a goal back before half-time for the Addicks, it was not enough to prevent the U's from chalking up their first win in seven matches in the Coca-Cola Championship.
Lisbie was delighted to make a winning return to his former club.
He said: "I think we've given our fans something to cheer about.
"We see it as the new year and achieving things.
"We had a chat amongst ourselves and the manager said put your chest out and go and enjoy yourselves and we will do that by winning games."
