COLCHESTER powerlifter Zoe Newson has struck gold at the World Para Powerlifting World Cup in Georgia.

The two-time Paralympic and Commonwealth bronze medallist was victorious for Great Britain on the opening day of the competition in Tbilisi, winning the women's under-41 kilogrammes category.

Newson and Maryna Kopiika battled until the end for the gold, with the British athlete lifting 95kg, to the Ukrainian's effort of 93kg.

It helped Newson claimed the first women's gold medal of the event, with only seven kilogrammes separating the top four.

Brazil's Lara Aparecida De Lima won bronze with a best of 90kg.

Writing on Twitter, Newson said: 'Came 1st with a lift of 95kgs. So happy with how I lifted today.

'Feels weird winning gold not bronze lol. Thank you everyone for your support.

'Two more days to go till I get to see my gorgeous boy and my gorgeous fiancé. Missing them both so much.'
