Colchester United chief executive Marie Partner has said the club are working day and night' to try and attract the best players to Layer Road.
The transfer window is due to reopen on Tuesday, with U's manager Geraint Williams keen to bring in reinforcements in a bid to lift his side away from the bottom of the Coca-Cola Championship table.
Colchester chairman Robbie Cowling has vowed to support Williams in the window.
And the U's will be ready to swoop when the time comes to bolster their squad, according to Partner.
She told the Gazette: "We're communicating every day.
"It's not just a nine-to-five thing - there are conversations between the three of us day and night and we're all doing our best to get in the players we want.
"At this stage of the season, there are a lot of trollies going around the supermarket.
"They're putting the players into the baskets but they're not quite reaching the tills."
Meanwhile Partner said that the U's will allow players to leave if it is right for all parties.
"Colchester has always been at the forefront for players being plucked away but we try to sit down with a player first and keep them at the club when we can," she said.
"The decision has to be right for the player and right for the club in terms of finance and timing."
The U's take on Southampton tomorrow at Layer Road, desperate for points to lift them clear of the bottom of the table.
Kem Izzet is doubtful after injuring his thumb in the defeat at QPR, while Kevin Watson and Aidan Davison are also missing.
