COLCHESTER United deserved their point following a goal-less draw at Salford City, according to boss Richie Wellens.

The Ammies manager was left frustrated that his play-off chasing side were unable to overcome a well-organised and disciplined U’s side, who well worth their point.

Salford boast the best home record in League Two and have not lost at the Peninsula Stadium since Colchester beat them there in February, 2020.

However, they were unable to overcome Wayne Brown’s side and Wellens admitted the visitors deserved their draw.

Wellens said: “We probably didn’t do enough to win - we didn’t take enough risks.

“I didn’t think we were in any doubt of losing the game but you have to give credit to Colchester.

“The distances between their back lads and midfield was very good and difficult to play through.

“They were organized, very disciplined and when you come up against a team like that, you do need to score as early as possible just to disrupt them and change the rhythm of the game and I think they deserved a point.

“We just didn’t play enough balls in behind; our runs weren’t clever enough.

“We kept going until the end and we kept trying but we need to take more risks and put more balls into box.

“We put three or four really good balls into the box in the last 20 minutes but people are peeling off to the edge of the box and not making that eight to ten-yard run where they might get hurt but also win the game for us.

“We need to make more chances – you’re not going to have a 100 per cent success of taking your chances and we need to make more, to give you more chance of scoring a goal.

“We definitely didn’t pass the ball quickly enough, although it is difficult.

“We tried and I have to give credit to my players but you also have to give Colchester a little bit of credit.”

Salford lie five points off the League Two play-off places but do have a game in hand on some of the teams above them and face leaders Cheltenham Town and Exeter City – who reside immediately above them - in their next two games.

Wellens added: “It’s a crazy league.

“We need a big push against Cheltenham and then we’ve got a free week.

“We can then start preparing and planning.

“At the moment, it’s a case of rest, recover, game and preparation is very slim on the ground.

“I don’t care if the next two games (against Cheltenham and Exeter) are tough – it’s a chance for three points against direct opposition and that’s what we need to do.”
