COLCHESTER United plan to offer a range of options to supporters who are due refunds, after the League Two season ended.

But U's chairman Robbie Cowling has appealed to fans for patience while they install a system to reimburse fans, following the 2019-20 campaign ending.

League Two clubs voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to formally end the season, in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Colchester's side will battle it out with Exeter over two legs in the play-off semi-finals for the right to take on either Northampton Town or Cheltenham Town, at Wembley.

Cowling said the club will offer fans who are due a refund a range of options and has thanked season-ticket holders for their patience.

But the U's owner and chairman has also appealed for supporters to be patient, with the club's ticket office still closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Cowling told the U's website: "Now that we know for certain that League Two is not being played to its conclusion and we are not going to fulfil the remaining five home games, we also know that we need to arrange refunds for our season tickets holders, annual subscribers and match ticket holders.

"I would like to ask those of you that are season ticket holders to be a little bit more patient with us.

"We still have our ticket office completely closed whilst staff are on furlough leave and the EFL have still not given us a clear indication as to when next season is going to be starting.

"Our plan is to offer those of you that are due a refund a number of options, such as using the money towards next year's season ticket, having five match credits, placing the funds onto a Privilege card or simply refunding you the money.

"A system to achieve this will take a bit of developing, so if we could be given a bit more time it would be extremely helpful.

"I also understand that these are difficult times so if anyone simply wants a full refund and need it ASAP, then please email us at ticketing@colchesterunited.net and we will deal with the request as soon as we can."

Colchester are set to face Exeter in their play-off semi-final first leg, next Thursday.

The game will take place behind closed doors at the JobServe Community Stadium, with a 5.15pm kick-off.

Cowling has appealed to U's fans to stay away from the ground and follow the Exeter game from home.

He added: "I would like to appeal to our fans to get behind the team from the safety of their own homes and please do not turn up at our stadium on Thursday.

"Doing so puts lives at risk and is likely to add additional costs that the club just can't afford at the moment."
