CHARLES Vernam's wonder goal against Colchester United has won the League Two Goal of the Month award for February.

Vernam collected the ball from just outside his own area and went past three defenders before sliding home a precise shot, to score Grimsby Town's winner in their 3-2 win at the JobServe Community Stadium on February 11.

Vernam is the Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Month winner for February, receiving 47 per cent of the public vote.

Lead Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month judge and Sky Sports Pundit Don Goodman said: “Vernam made the Colchester players look like evil henchmen in a James Bond movie as one by one he slalomed his way through them before striking a drive past the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner.

“He’s been a revelation since Ian Holloway took over for the Mariners scoring goals and running teams ragged with his dribbling ability.”

Vernam beat off competition from Forest Green Rovers' Odin Bailey and Dylan Connolly of Bradford City, to win the accolade.

Vernam said: “It’s a great feeling to win this award and for my goal to be recognised by players and fans of not just Grimsby but other clubs as well.

“At the time I didn’t quite realise how long the run I went on was but I have to say thank you to a few of my team mates as well who’s runs off the ball moved the defenders for me to keep on going.

“For it to be the goal for my first career hat trick as well made it even more special.”

The winners of the Sky Bet EFL Goals of the Month were chosen after a fan poll on skysports.com.

The shortlist for the poll is decided by a judging panel.

The judging panel comprises Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman; Sky Bet Sponsorship Executive Matt Goodwin and EFL Senior Media Manager Rob Meaden.
