MARK Bentley feels Canvey Island have 13 cup finals remaining as they look to make a late entry into the Isthmian North play-off places.

Bentley, who is enjoying his first full season in charge of the Gulls, targeted a minimum of a spot in the top five before the campaign got underway.

Eighth-placed Canvey are nine points adrift of the play-off positions ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Cambridge City and Bentley has called on his players to be more ruthless.

“We have drawn our last two games, but draws are no good to us at this stage of the season,” said Bentley.

“Wins are what we need and I think there is one play-off place still available because the other teams currently in the top five are basically nailed on to remain there.

“We have 13 cup finals remaining but we have to remember it is not in our own hands.

“Other teams need to slip up and we need to take advantage.

“We will keep fighting until the end of the season.”

Cambridge, who hold their home fixtures at Histon’s Glassworld Stadium, head into tomorrow’s meeting having recorded three wins on the trot.

Meanwhile, in their last two outings, Canvey have recorded 4-4 and 2-2 draws against Heybridge Swifts and AFC Sudbury respectively.

Last minute Gulls levellers came in both clashes and Bentley wants his side to use that to their advantage.

“Hopefully the late goals can give us confidence and it’s nice to see the boys battling until the end,” added Bentley.
