Colchester United head coach John McGreal on Exeter City draw

COLCHESTER United head coach John McGreal felt a draw was probably a fair result after his side played out a stalemate with Exeter City.

The U’s moved up to fifth in League Two after claiming a 0-0 draw at St James Park, extending their unbeaten run in the league to 15 matches.

McGreal said: “I’m delighted with the performance.

“On the whole, I’d say a draw was about right.

“We gave them opportunities in the first minute and last minutes but the chances they’ve had have been off our misplaced passes but I thought generally, we had the better chances.

“We had more shots, a kick off the line and Callum (Harriott) had one saved off the line.

“You could say it was good defending put under pressure.

“There were a couple of times when we misplaced passes in midfield but in the attacking third, I thought we looked a little bit more of a potent threat.

“The pitch wasn’t great but their defender made an unbelievable block to deny Theo (Robinson) with around five minutes to go.

“Normally, those kind of things go through a defender’s legs but at the minute, we’re just not getting that break in the box.

“It’s a great run we’re on at the minute.

“Yes, you could say we’re having too many draws of late but it’s through no lack of trying with the draws we’ve had.

“Some have been costly but we’re not going to change how we want to do things.”

McGreal had special words of praise for the 156 U’s fans who made the long trip down to Devon to watch their side in action.

“I’m delighted with the fans – I thought that they were brilliant today,” said boss McGreal.

“Our dressing room was right under the stand where they were and we could hear them and the drum going - you can hear it before you come out.

“It’s a donkey trek – that’s how far this place is and I thought they put in a good performance to warrant their trip.”
