IPSWICH Town's hopes of a trip to Wembley were dashed after suffering last-gasp heartache at Exeter City, in the Leasing.com Trophy.

The Blues conceded in injury time to suffer a 2-1 defeat, against the League Two high-fliers.

Former Town midfielder Lee Martin grabbed the all-important winning goal, in the third-round tie.

Nicky Ajose had earlier put the hosts ahead in first-half injury time before Will Keane popped up with a 58th-minute leveller for Paul Lambert's men.

However, Martin's late winner proved costly and condemned struggling Town to another defeat, stretching their winless run over 90 minutes to 12 games.

However, one major positive was that Teddy Bishop and Freddie Sears both made their first starts of the season, following long-term injury lay-offs.

Town are back in League One action against Accrington Stanley at Portman Road next Saturday.
