COLCHESTER United will discover their next Carabao Cup opponents tonight - with head coach John McGreal hoping for a home draw against top-flight opposition.

The U's booked their place in the third round of the League Cup for the first time since 2004 after beating Premier League outfit Crystal Palace on penalties at Selhurst Park, last night.

Colchester progressed 5-4 on spot-kicks, after the second-round tie finished 0-0 after 90 minutes.

The third-round draw will take place live on Sky Sports from Sincil Bank tonight, following the conclusion of Lincoln City’s Round Two fixture with Premier League side Everton.

Colchester are ball number 16.

McGreal said: “We just want a home tie against a Premier League team – that would be brilliant.

“The chairman would be delighted with that as well and it would be a great reward for us.

“I know I’ve not had a good record in the cups in my tenure but we’ve won our last two now.

“It’s been a long time since this club got through to the third round.”

The seven Premier League clubs competing in European competitions will enter at this stage, including current holders Manchester City.

The third-round ties will take place in the week commencing Monday, September 23.
