DESPITE seeing his team plunder ten goals in the space of two games, Wivenhoe Town manager Gary Monti has refused to get carried away as his side prepare to face Burnham Ramblers on Saturday.

The Dragons brushed aside Brightlingsea Reserves 3-0 last Friday in Thurlow Nunn League division one south and strolled past Newbury Forest in the Essex Senior Cup - thrashing them 7-1 - on Tuesday night.

But Monti is counting no chickens ahead of a league trip to Burnham.

“Burnham are dark horses as well this season and they’ve turned it around," he said.

"They were a bit like us last season, sort of the whipping boys.

"They have a good manager and he’s steadied the ship and brought some players in.

“They’ve started to play well; I think they will beat a lot of teams this season.

"It’s not an easy game."

The Wivenhoe boss faces a selection dilemma with up to seven players unavailable for the Nunn League clash.

“We’ve got seven players missing including five that played on Tuesday night that can’t play on Saturday,” Monti confirmed.

"Although we do have a strong squad."

Tuesday’s cup win gave Wivenhoe back to back wins for the first time this season.

With goals flying in from all areas of the pitch, the boss admits his team’s form is looking promising.

He said: “I’m very pleased with two wins on the bounce as it gives us confidence.

"The players know they’re playing well.

"We’ve started to gel now and we have some very quick players up front creating us a lot of chances, hence the goals."

Having lost two and won two of their opening four league fixtures, Monti argues that his team’s best form is yet to come.

He said: “You’re not going to see the best of most teams until mid-September when all the holidays have finished and everyone is back."

"In the meantime, it’s very hard to build consistency because you’re having to field a different team each week.

"Things will settle down towards the middle of September and then you’ll probably see the best of us from then on.”
