COLCHESTER United have received a cash boost after their former player Macauley Bonne clinched a move to the Championship.

The 23-year-old has left Leyton Orient to join Charlton Athletic for a fee of £200,000, after signing a three-year deal with the Addicks.

And that means that the U’s are set to receive around £60,000 as part of the deal, after a 30 per cent sell on clause was built into the deal that took the striker to the O’s from the JobServe Community Stadium in the summer of 2017.

Bonne has signed a three-year contract with the Addicks, two years after the striker left the JobServe Community Stadium to join Orient for an undisclosed fee, after ending his eight-year spell with Colchester.

The Ipswich-born forward, who scored his first professional goal on his 18th birthday when he netted for Colchester against Peterborough in October 2013, made 82 appearances in total during his time at the U’s, scoring 16 goals.

Bonne scored 49 goals in 102 games at Brisbane Road, helping them win promotion back to League Two.

He was Orient's top goalscorer during both of his two seasons there, scoring more than 20 goals in each campaign.

The Zimbabwe international played a big part in helping Orient return to the EFL as National League champions, in the 2018-19 season.

Meanwhile Colchester will return to Carden Park next month, as part of their preparations for the new League Two campaign.

The U's have also announced this morning that they will take on Cefn Druids in a pre-season friendly, on July 13 (kick-off 1pm).

Druids, who play their football in the JD Welsh Premier League, are the oldest football club in Wales and were founded in 1872.

Colchester will discover their first opponents in League Two this season when the EFL fixtures are announced on Thursday.

They will also find out their Carabao Cup first-round opponents on the same day.
