BRIGHTLINGSEA Regent midfielder Harrison Banner is hoping to become a regular fixture in the club's first team.

The 20-year-old made his full debut in Saturday's contest at home to Merstham, which finished 1-1.

It was a big milestone for the former Colne Football Academy starlet and something that has whetted his appetite for more Bostik League action.

“It was a great experience and I was delighted to be named in the starting line-up," he told the Gazette.

“I felt I let myself down a bit but it was a learning curve and I just want to keep playing and get my fitness levels right.

“The most important thing was the fact the lads turned things round in the second half and got that result (having been behind at the interval). We deserved it.

“I thought I did well at times and was unlucky not to score a goal or two but at others my lack of match fitness let me down.

“I hate making excuses but it definitely needs to improve.

“Hopefully if I keep working hard, I’ll get more chances.

“I was buzzing to see my name on the team sheet.

“That’s what I’m aiming for and hopefully it’s the first of many starts.

“It’s certainly whet my appetite for more."

Harrison, who signed for the club's reserves in the summer but has worked his way up and been training with both squads, had a long spell on the sidelines after tearing ligaments in his ankle.

He has been making sporadic substitute appearances since.

“My aim for next season is to become an important player in the first team," he said.

“Getting ten minutes here and there isn’t the same as being in from the start.

“There’s a lot of quality here and I’m learning all the time.

“Even when you’re watching from the bench you can pick things up.

“I feel I’m at a good club to progress.

“(Manager) Tom (Rothery) gives young players a chance and isn’t afraid to throw them in from the start.

“Then it’s your shirt to keep if you produce performances.

“The main thing is that we keep getting the points to stay in the race for the play-offs.

“That would be massive for the club and it would be a huge achievement to play my part.”
