Colchester United boss John McGreal says he is hoping for good news on striker Luke Norris after their leading scorer was stretchered off in their 1-0 win over Swindon Town this afternoon.

Norris suffered an ankle injury in the closing stages of the first half in the League Two clash against his old club at the JobServe Community Stadium and was taken to hospital as a result.

McGreal said: "We're hoping all the best for Luke.

"It's around the ankle area - I could actually see what he's done.

"He's moving backwards with no-one around him and he's just pulled up.

"It was innocuous - a lot of players score against their old team but it's not nice when you pick up an injury against them.

"Tony (Flynn) has gone with him and he's with his wife and his mum.

"Hopefully Tony will be in touch with me tonight to let me know what's happening.

Sammie Szmodics' well-taken strike gave Colchester victory over Swindon, lifting them up to third in the table.

Szmodics struck in first-half stoppage-time for the U's, finishing clinically after being set up brilliantly by the impressive Frank Nouble.

McGreal said: “Sam (Szmodics) is in a rich vein of form at the minute and we have to keep him fit.

“The goal we scored was no more than we deserved in that first half."

It was Colchester's third 1-0 win in their last four games, prompting boss McGreal to reference the successful Arsenal team of the late 1980s and early 1990s, who under George Graham made a habit of winning with that scoreline.

He added: “Arsenal built Championship teams on 1-0 wins going back years.

“We haven’t got to that stage at all but it’s a different win.

“I keep saying it but there’s 46 different games to win a game of football and we proved that last week, against Lincoln.

“That was a terrific, gritty performance but I thought it was a lot different today and we played some terrific football at times.

“We had to dig in but the boys knew the importance of the 1-0.

“Rene (Gilmartin) made a wonderful save to push (Martin Smith’s shot) away, in the second half but it was a terrific win.”
